Communion Update: South Carolina and things
Sunday, October 16th, 2011A couple of things worth noting with regard to events and relationships in the Anglican Communion. 1) My Bishop, John Harrower, has written to Mark Lawrence, Bishop of South Carolina, expressing support in the current circumstances – which I have written about before. The letter can be found on the diocesan website. Here is an [...]
Eyes to South Carolina
Saturday, October 8th, 2011When it comes to the tumult of global Anglicanism there hasn’t been an event recently that has caused the commentators to fire up. Everything has been moving inexorably in the same direction as before. TEC & Co seem adamant about cementing their revisionism in practice and seem content with their separatism. On the other side, [...]
Rowan on AMIE
Wednesday, July 6th, 2011Lambeth Palace has released a very polite response to the formation of the Anglican Mission in England. Here’s the rub: The issue is one of episcopal collegiality. There needs to be some further discussion of this development between those involved and the diocesan bishops of the Church of England.
The Right Questions
Friday, June 24th, 2011Consider this extract from a Chris Sugden article in an upcoming edition of Evangelicals Now. Towards the end he quotes Vinay Samuel, “one of the leadership team at GAFCON in Jerusalem” who is asking the right questions at the GAFCON end of things: The real issue continues to be evangelical uncertainty in some areas of [...]
Anglican Mission in England
Thursday, June 23rd, 2011GAFCON has announced a new society within the Church of England dedicated to the encouragement of ”church planting and all forms of Christian witness in accord with the Jerusalem Statement of the GAFCON Conference in June 2008.” This is an interesting thing. I wonder the extent of the overlap with other organisations, such as Church [...]
State of ACNA Address
Thursday, June 23rd, 2011Archbishop Bob Duncan speaks at the provincial council of the Anglican Church of North America. As with all synodical speeches there is some minutiea but there is some profundity also. I particularly appreciate the comments about reorganisation so that they are focussed on the future of mission rather than on the past history marked by [...]
Venerable Venables
Thursday, May 26th, 2011Excellent interview with Archbishop Greg Venables, former primate of the Southern Cone. His has always been a forthright voice in the Anglican tumult. Of particular note is his reference to GAFCON in the light of the non-attendance at this year’s Primates’ Meeting in Dublin. My paraphrase – “We are not here to fight liberalism. We’ve [...]
The Nairobi Statement & GAFCON 2
Thursday, May 12th, 2011I’ve been browsing the report from the GAFCON/FCA secretariat which recently met in Nairobi. The report talks about the new chairman – Eliud Wabukala from Kenya, pictured. It also includes the Nairobi Statement. The Statement is worth a read. Most of it is unsurprising, e.g.: 8. We continue to be troubled by the promotion of a [...]
Review: The Lord’s Supper in Human Hands – Epilogue
Wednesday, March 16th, 2011An epilogue to The Lord’s Supper in Human Hands, a treatise on lay and diaconal administration of Holy Communion which I reviewed some time ago, has been made available as a free pdf. I was off-deck when the Appellate Tribunal brought its 2010 response to the Synod of Sydney’s resolution accepting legal argument for non-presbyteral [...]
